2009_mm_mandrakeComic strip creator Lee Falk was just 19 when he began a career that resulted in the development of two classic fantasy comics, The Phantom and  Mandrake the Magician.

Falk was a college strudent when he conceived of Mandrake, the first strip in which magic was the main theme.  Many imitators followed in the wake of the dapper illusionist’s cape, but Mandrake has survived them all.

Mandrake made its debut in 1934, a time when comics were becoming more and more occupied with story and plot. Critics hailed Falk’s work as among the best.  Mandrake was admired then, as it is now, for its tightly constructed plots, rich but economic dialogue, and its high drama and suspense.
